Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to earn an M.Ed. online degree?

Time to completion of an M.Ed. online degree varies by program and institution. The average time it takes to earn a master’s in education degree is two years, however, online options can shorten the duration. On average, the online M.Ed. takes 1.5 years to complete.

Enrollment status impacts time to completion. Full-time enrollment is ideal for individuals who want to earn their degree in a rapid rate of time. Some online M.Ed. programs on our list offer full-time enrollment and take one full calendar year, including summer, to finish. The downside of full-time enrollment is time spent on classes. Some programs allow students to take one class per term, but with full-time status, two and three classes per term are taken. If outside obligations, such as work and family responsibilities, are light, a full-time M.Ed. online degree might work for you.

Individuals with outside responsibilities often choose to take classes on a part-time basis. Part-time programs offer the convenience and flexibility that full-time programs do not. Part-time programs allow students to take one class at a time and work at their own pace. The average completion time for part-time programs is two to three years. Some school offer extended degree completion time, which means you have up to four to six years to earn your degree online.

What is the job outlook for individuals with an M.Ed. online degree?

We gathered job outlook information from the United States Department of Labor – Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to find the overall projected growth rate for school teachers and principals. These individuals often hold master’s degrees or M.Ed. online degrees.

BLS reports the overall employment of kindergarten and elementary school teachers is projected to grow seven percent through 2026. This percentage is on par with the average for all occupations. As rising student enrollment is seen in schools, demand for teachers will be steady.

The employment of middle school teachers is also projected to increase. BLS indicates a steady increase of eight percent through 2026, also due to rising student enrollment. This is the same for high school teachers, who should see an eight percent overall growth rate in employment over the next seven years.

Since school principals must hold a master’s degree, we examined the job outlook for school administrators or principals. According to BLS, employment for school principals, no matter the school level, is projected to grow eight percent through 2026. Employment growth for principals will be impacted by student enrollment and the number of educational institutions available. District and state budgets increase and decrease from year to year, which greatly impacts demand for new schools and principal positions.

How much money can I make with an M.Ed. online degree?

PayScale, a global compensation research company that gathers and analyzes salary data, reports the average annual earnings for an individual with a Master of Education is $56,000.

Breaking this number down even further shows that elementary school teachers earn $51,175 on average. The bottom ten percent of elementary school teachers earn $35,000 per year, and the top ten percent of earners make $74,000 per year. Middle school teachers earn an average salary of $52,378. The lowest ten percent of middle school teachers earn $37,000, while the highest ten percent of earners make $75,000 per year. We also reviewed salaries for high school teachers. On average, high school teachers earn a yearly salary of $53,988. The bottom ten percent of earners make $37,000 and the top ten percent make $79,000.

For teachers, annual salary fluctuates by state, region, and school district. Location greatly impacts the salary made by school teachers. The second factor impacting salary is years of experience. As expected, teachers with more experience working in education and the classroom earned a higher salary than new teachers.

School administrators also hold master’s in education, even M.Ed. online degrees. The United States Department of Labor – Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports the 2018 median annual pay for elementary, middle, and high school principals is $95,310.

What if I don’t want to teach after earning an M.Ed. online degree?

Good news for recent graduates of M.Ed. online programs who don’t want to teach: you are not alone. Many people pursue education degrees with no intention of teaching in the classroom. School administration or principal jobs offer a favorable job outlook and higher earnings potential.

We reviewed the roles of elementary, middle, and high school principals. A principal oversees school operations, including daily activities, but does not typically teach. Principals are in charge of coordinating curricula, managing staff and teachers, and providing a safe space for learning. Principals set and oversee academic standards and goals. Their job is to make sure teachers have the proper resources and equipment to help meet standards and learning goals for students.

In public schools, principals implement the learning standards set forth by the district and state. They ensure federal regulations are being met by preparing teachers with assessment tools. Also, principals assess their teachers in order to ensure standards are met.

Principals typically work year-round, unlike teachers. Although, many schools and districts have implemented year-round schooling. Principals also work extended hours, as they serve as representative of their school at meetings, activities, and community events. The role of the principal is one of the most important in education.

What are the admission requirements for M.Ed. online programs?

The admission requirements of most M.Ed. online programs vary by institution. Top-tier programs have more stringent criteria than lower-ranked programs.

Top-ranked institutions or education programs ask for GRE scores received within the last five years. In some cases, graduate test scores are waived with favorable undergraduate performance. This means an applicant with a 3.50 undergraduate GPA may not have to take the GRE for admission. However, many of the programs on our list do not require graduate test scores no matter what your undergraduate GPA. If you want to bypass graduate exams, you are not alone. Many of the programs on our list value work experience and do not require the GRE for admission, but rather focus on professional qualifications.

Nearly all of the M.Ed. online programs on our list require an undergraduate degree, though not all ask for bachelor’s degrees in education. However, you must offer an accredited (often regionally, but sometimes nationally) bachelor’s degree. Most schools and programs will not accept undergraduate work from an institution lacking accreditation.

Other admission requirements may include two to three letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to your academic and professional experience. Also, official transcripts, a statement of purpose or goals, and a resumé are required for admission to M.Ed. online programs.
