More than 120 majors and degree programs are available at the University of Virginia. Undergrads can choose between Bachelor of Art (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BS) programs in Computer Science and from other tech majors such as electrical engineering and computer engineering. The political and social thought program is unique to the university. It gives students the chance to ask questions about politics and to look at the connection between society and politics. In the urban and environmental planning major, students learn how to plan cities and towns based on the needs of citizens and the area itself. Other majors include religious studies, psychology, drama, economics, global studies, and youth and social innovation.
Nearly 30 programs are open to both graduate and doctoral students attending the University of Virginia too. While the Master of Architecture is suitable for students who want to learn about drafting blueprints and building codes, the Master of Architectural History is better suited for those who want to preserve and protect the historic buildings in Virginia and other states. The Juris Doctor program is available from the law school at the University of Virginia and prepares students for taking the Bar exam. The university offers doctoral programs in subjects that include education and business administration too. A Master of Business Administration (MBA) is also available.
The School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) at the University of Virginia offers online programs. Undergrads can choose between a Bachelor in Liberal Arts (BLA) or a Bachelor of Professional Studies (BPS) in Health Management. Students can transfer credits into either program and take all of their classes online. Six certificates are also available for online students that complement their existing degrees and help them in their careers. Those options include a certificate in human resources management for those who work in HR departments and a certificate in procurement and contract management for students responsible for hiring and finding new employees.
Though the University of Virginia doesn’t offer any full graduate degree programs online, it has an executive MBA that includes flexible courses for working professionals. The eight certificate programs that are available online let students earn credits that they can transfer to another university or use in a traditional degree program at the university. They can choose from certificates in project management, cybersecurity management, digital marketing, health science management, procurement and contracts management, public administration, leadership and leadership in human resources management. There is also a certificate in public relations available that does not feature credits that will transfer.

The University of Virginia is a public university established by Thomas Jefferson. Founded in 1819, the university came about due to the plans he created while serving as President. It is now home to the Academical Village, which dates back to Jefferson’s days and is a world heritage site. Also known as UVA, it offers many programs in politics and political science as well as a business program that Bloomberg BusinessWeek ranks as the fifth-best program in the nation. U.S. News and World Report ranks UVA as the 28th best university in the United States and the 107th best college in the world. It also appeared on that publication’s ranking of the best business schools in the country among all colleges and public schools. UVA is one of the largest schools in the south too, with an enrollment of more than 24,000 students.
University of Virginia Accreditation Details
UVA created a review committee filled with professionals who are responsible for making sure that the university maintains its general standards for accreditation. That committee helped UVA obtain and renew its regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). This accreditation lets students who have a financial need get an aid package after using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The nursing, law and school psychology programs are a few of the others at UVA that have accreditation.
University of Virginia Application Requirements
The application deadline for incoming undergrads is October 15 for those applying for early decision. An early action deadline of November first also lets students apply earlier. UVA has a final deadline for applications of January first. The Committee on Undergrad Admission looks at test scores and other factors when accepting students. Prospective students can self-report their standardized test scores on the application. They need to also submit an official transcript, secondary school report and a mid-year report. UVA asks for a final transcript at the end of the student’s senior year too.
Prospective graduate students should look at the requirements of their degree programs to make sure that they know how to apply and what to submit. The MBA program has a separate application and asks that students submit some documents through the application. Most of the UVA graduate programs require a minimum of a 3.0+ grade point average, bachelor’s degree, and official transcripts. Students may also need to submit a writing sample, personal essay, goals statement, letters of recommendation and/or a standardized test score.
Tuition and Financial Aid
At UVA, undergrads pay $13,682 each year for full-time enrollment in their first, second and third years if they are also residents of Virginia. Nonresidents pay $44,741 per year at UVA. The costs for residents can rise to more than $14,000 a year in some programs and climb to more than $47,000 a year for nonresidents in select programs. UVA charges students a slightly lower rate when they reach the final year in any degree program. Graduate students pay different rates in their programs too, which can range from $714 per credit hour to more than $18,000 a year. MBA students pay more than $130,000 to complete all the requirements of their programs.
Financial aid packages can help all types of students who have a demonstrated need, but UVA only awards aid packages to those who submit the FAFSA. This and the applications that undergrads submit will help them qualify for scholarships based on both need and merit. They can get the subsidized loans offered by the federal government and other types of loans. Work-study opportunities are available for all types of students as well as certain grant and loan programs. Students in any University of Virginia degree program can get financial aid.
