As college tuition prices climb to exorbitant numbers, prospective students, and their families, stress over affording education after high school. However, free online colleges offering free online degrees help relieve this anxiety. Many reputable, accredited, and highly ranked institutions now offer tuition-free education for a certain demographic of students. Some of these colleges even offer tuition-free options for all, regardless of race, gender, or financial need.

Through data collection and research, we located 25 colleges and universities that offered tuition-free education. We also located 50 two-year institutions that offered free tuition for online courses and programs.

Ranking Methodology for Top 25 Free Online Colleges or Universities

We looked at approximately 100 colleges and universities that offer online courses or programs, as well as financial aid packages designed to wipe out tuition costs. From this information, we created two lists. The first list includes 25 free online colleges–four-year institutions–that offer free tuition programs for qualifying students. We ranked the 25 colleges or universities by the number of programs offered online. Institutions with a higher number of online offerings were listed higher on the ranking than institutions with a lower number of online programs or courses. In the event of a tie, the institutions were ranked alphabetically. Our second list contains two-year institutions–community colleges–that offer qualifying students free, or close to free, tuition. The two-year colleges are listed alphabetically.
