How much money will I make with a master’s in technology online degree?

Salary data for individuals with a master’s degree in technology continues to show the field remains one with attractive pay and benefits. According to Occupational Outlook Handbook data compiled by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the 2018 median annual wage for computer and information systems managers across all sectors was $142,530. Compared to the average annual salary of $38,640 for all occupations, it is clear that IT systems managers make a lucrative living. As with most occupations, compensation occurs within a wide spectrum with the lowest 10% of IT managers earning $85,000 compared to the highest 10% who earned $208,000. As shown, even the lowest IT managers far outpace the average annual salary of all occupations at a ratio of more than 2:1.

Industries play a salient role in occupational rate of pay. Individuals within the information industry earn the highest median annual salary of $157,810. The information industry includes a wide swath of different types of organizations that create products and services including software companies, banking, market research, entertainment, hardware, and more.

How long does it take to earn a master’s in technology online degree?

Earning a master’s in technology online is no simple endeavor. The time it takes to complete a program is impacted by several variables including institution, program, the individual learner, and much more. Online programs tend to be more flexible to accommodate working students, so the timelines can vary greatly. The majority of programs are designed for students to complete in approximately 2-2.5 years. The most time-efficient programs can be completed in 12-15 months and typically require students to attend full-time, which is generally two courses per semester year round. It is important for students to note that programs also have maximum time frames in which the program must be completed. These maximum time allotments are generally 5-7 years. Should students go past these time limits, they are generally required to reapply and may have to take additional courses.

Students earning their master’s in technology online often have full-time jobs along with other outside responsibilities. Because of this, program administrators often allow students to fluctuate enrollment levels or even take a semester off. It is important for students to know these rules before matriculating. Cohort-based programs are generally more stringent with their enrollment and require students to take a prescribed set of courses each term in order to stay in sequence with their peers.

What is the job outlook for individuals with a master’s in technology online degree?

The overall job outlook for individuals holding a master’s in technology online is quite strong compared to relative occupational growth across all jobs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates IT manager jobs will grow by 12% for the period of 2016-2026. For context, the overall job growth rate during this same time is expected to be 7%.

Occupational accretion will be driven as technology continues to be an integral part of all organizations. Industries are increasingly expanding their digital footprints, which necessitate the need for qualified professionals to lead and manage technological advances. Moreover, with the proliferation of digital platforms across all sectors, the threat of cyber attacks from both foreign and domestic sources will continue to increase. As such, experts in implementing and managing cyber security measures will be needed.

While job growth is expected to be 12% for the ten-year period of 2016-2026, regional differences exist when drilling down into the data. Individuals living in or willing to move to high demand states and locales will have more opportunities due to higher growth rates. In general, western and northeastern states have higher demand for IT managers. In particular, Washington, California, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York are major industry drivers, with Texas also employing a large number of IT professionals. The top three metro areas include New York-Newark, Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, and Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim.

What are the admission requirements for master’s in technology online degree programs?

Admission requirements for master’s in technology online programs vary greatly. Programmatic ranking and type of program are main drivers in requirements and standards. The majority of programs require students to have a background in information technology including a bachelor’s degree in information technology or a related degree such as computer science. For those programs that do not require an IT-related bachelor’s degree, they often want students to have successfully passed undergraduate courses in math (statistics and/or precalculus) and basic programming courses. Programs that welcome students from all academic and work backgrounds will often require students to pass a foundational course before full matriculation.

Top ranked programs have the most robust admission requirements due to high programmatic demand. These programs require an IT-related bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited school, top GRE/GMAT scores, three letters of recommendation, personal statement, and IT work experience. Applications are evaluated holistically with the strongest overall students being accepted.

Mid-tier institutions often have similar admission requirements with the exception of standardized test scores. Test score thresholds are often at or below the 50th percentile, or the requirement can be waived if the applicant has two or more years of work experience in an IT position.

Lower-tier programs often do not require test scores or a bachelor’s degree in an IT-related discipline. These programs’ acceptance rates are typically very high with nearly every applicant who applies being accepted.
