Western Governors University was founded in 1997 in an unusual manner. At a meeting of the Western Governors Association, a group of governors developed a plan to create an institute of higher learning that would reach a larger audience. From its start, the university was designed to be different from any other college or university as it focused on providing flexible schedules that would allow working adults to achieve their higher education goals. It was at a time when more people were able to access the internet, further enhancing the development of the university. An entirely new learning model, online learning, was becoming a reality and Western Governors University tapped into those resources quickly. Although many online universities are for-profit institutions, Western Governors University remains non-profit.
