Southern New Hampshire University is a private university that dates back to the 1930s. Established in 1932 as an accounting and business school, it offered programs in accounting, secretarial arts, business and similar subjects. Southern New Hampshire University operated as a for-profit institute of higher learning run by a man and his wife. Though the school did not make many changes in terms of the courses it offered, it began offering more degree programs, which led to it becoming the New Hampshire College of Accounting and Commerce in 1961. Operating under the name of New Hampshire College, its curriculum expanded. The school was one of the first in the state to offer graduate degree programs and was one of the reasons its name was changed in 2001 to Southern New Hampshire University. Most use the abbreviation SNHU when talking about the university today.
SNHU divides its campus and degree programs into six different schools and colleges that include the School of Business and the College of Online & Continuing Education. This school once offered distance education programs but now offers online programs as well as weekend and evening classes. U.S. News & World Report ranked the university in the number one spot on a list of the nation’s most innovative schools in 2017 and ranked it among the top colleges in the northern region of the country. SNHU has an enrollment of more than 4,000 students in terms of those taking classes on its main campus and more than 70,000 when you factor in online students and those studying at one of its regional centers.
Southern New Hampshire University Accreditation Details
Even if you plan on getting your degree online and never visiting the SNHU campus, you still want to make sure that it has the accreditation that is needed to get financial aid. Regional accreditation is also important for those who want to transfer credits at any point. SNHU has accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), which is a form of regional accreditation. Some of its degree programs also have specialized accreditations. These accreditations comes from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs, American Culinary Federation Education Foundation and Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
Southern New Hampshire University Application Requirements
Southern New Hampshire University makes it very easy for you to apply online because its application is just a single page in length and does not require that you create an account. You use drop down menus to pick where you want to study, what level of education you want to complete, the area of study that interests you and the program you want to study. The next section covers your contact information and asks for your full name, complete home address, a phone number and your email address. This application also asks for your gender, ethnicity and whether you served in the military. You can then enter any higher education that you completed in the past, though this section is optional and not required.
Once the university receives your application, you may receive a text message or an email that lets you know it received your application and will begin processing it. You may need to supply some more information or documents like a transcript, your resume or a short essay that serves as a writing sample. Once accepted, you can apply for financial aid and register for classes before the start of the next semester.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Studying online helps you save money in a few different ways. You usually need to spend less on resources such as textbooks and school supplies because you do work online, and you do not need to spend money and time to get to the campus. SNHU also charges less for its online classes. Tuition for traditional online students is $960 per course or $320 per credit hour, and this tuition rate is the same for undergrads enrolled in degree programs and certificate programs. The university reduces this rate for active military personnel, their spouses and dependents. Those students pay $225 per credit hour or $675 per course. The cost for graduate students is $627 per credit hour or $1,881 per course. Military students, their spouses and dependents pay $470 per credit hour or $1,410 per class.
To get financial aid and reduce the amount that you pay out of pocket for your classes, you’ll need to file the FAFSA. Though you can do this months or even weeks before starting classes, you can also apply early in the year or even in October of the year before you plan to begin classes. Financial aid packages can include loans, grants and other options. Unsubsidized loans are available for graduate students, but undergrads can apply for subsidized loans.
Online Degrees Available
Southern New Hampshire University offers more than 200 degree programs across all levels for its online students. Many of these are career oriented programs that the university designed to help students prepare for working in different jobs and starting their careers after finishing their studies. More than 100 of these programs are at the bachelor’s level. You can enroll in the accounting program and pick a concentration in forensic accounting and fraud examination to learn how to investigate possible crimes and find evidence of criminal activities. The university offers a bachelor’s degree in business with various concentrations available as well. You can study business administration, business finance, computer information technology, international management or marketing. Other bachelor’s programs available online include those in communications, creative writing, graphic design and media arts, human services, psychology and sports management.

Those at the master’s level will find nearly 100 options available to them. The university has a criminal justice program with concentrations available in counter terrorism for those who want to stop terrorist threats and in public safety administration for those who want to work in public service fields. Its English and creative writing graduate program is another popular option. Not only will you learn how to improve your writing skills, but you can choose to concentrate your studies on fiction, non-fiction or poetry writing.
