About Northeastern University

Northeastern University is a private university with a flagship campus in Boston, Massachusetts and smaller campuses in other parts of the country. Founded in 1898, it started as an extension school that offered classes through the local YMCA. Classes only met at night and were only open to men. Programs were available in law, finance, business, and engineering but later expanded to include options in other fields. Called the Evening Institute for Young Men, it would later add daytime classes and change its name to Northeastern College. It became Northeastern University in 1922 and began offerings its first liberal arts classes a few years later.

As the school transitioned to a college and later a university, it began looking for new ways to educate students. There are now departments and divisions of the university in multiple neighborhoods of Boston. Seattle is home to a large branch of the university that offers graduate degree programs. Similar programs are available on its campuses in Toronto, San Jose, and Charlotte. Both The Wall Street Journal and U.S. News and World Report rank Northeastern as one of the top 100 colleges in America. The university also offers strong programs in business and game design.
