The University of Tennessee is comprised of eleven graduate colleges and ten undergraduate colleges that include the Haslam College of Business, the Herbert College of Agriculture, and the Tickle College of Engineering. Popular programs at the university include those in business, engineering, communication, and social sciences. Other popular pursuits include programs in management, parks, and recreation, fitness studies, and journalism.
The university’s student-faculty ratio is 17:1, and about 30 percent of its classes feature fewer than 20 students enrolled. The freshmen retention rate is an impressive 86 percent. Students may enroll in classes and attend sessions at the campus in Knoxville, or they can enroll in online study via the Vols Online website that the university runs for out-of-state and remote students. The university runs programs offered 100 percent online, as well as hybrid classes that feature on-campus and online learning.
Available programs include those at the bachelor’s, doctoral, graduate certificate and master’s levels. Students who enroll in online programs are generally not located on campus, and the university considers its online programs distance education classes. Further programs are available at the graduate level in educational administration, educational psychology, and information sciences.
Prospective students interested in doctoral programs at the University of Tennessee may choose from the Ph.D. in Nursing or the Doctor of Social Work. One of the benefits of enrolling in distance education programs is that students pay fewer fees than students on campus, so the overall cost of obtaining a degree is lower than if a student was to attend classes in Knoxville.

The University of Tennessee is a university located in Knoxville that has existed since before Tennessee was a state. The campus is the flagship of the state’s university system and has more than 28,000 students enrolled. The university has produced several Rhodes Scholars, and one of its graduates received a Nobel Prize in Economics. The university has close ties to the nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
When it opened its doors in 1794, the institution was known as Blount College and would become a university almost 50 years later when it was renamed East Tennessee University. University of Tennessee Accreditation Details
The University of Tennessee is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and is authorized to award college degrees with that approval. The university has been continuously accredited since 1897 and is reaccredited every ten years. The university has also been authorized to operate in Tennessee since 1807 as a result of the Tennessee Public Acts Chapter 64.
There are many national organizations that have accredited programs at the university. Approvals have included the programs in accounting, which have been accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, and the advertising and public relations programs, which have been accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. Other accreditations come from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Programs and the National Architectural Accrediting Board.
University of Tennessee Application Requirements
First-time college students who want to apply to the University of Tennessee will need to meet several regular admissions requirements to secure a successful entry into the university. Students must have a high school diploma from a state-accredited school and will be approved by the university if they have an ACT score of at least 21 or an SAT of at least 980 while also having a minimum 2.7 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
Students without a state-accredited high school diploma must have a GPA of at least 2.85 with similar score requirements for standardized tests. Applicants who have a GED may apply to the university but must contact the Admissions Office for information on what materials to send. Students may be considered for conditional admission where final acceptance isn’t granted until certain conditions set by the Conditional Admission Committee have been met.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition amounts are divided by in-state and out-of-state rates, as well as by the level of study. Undergraduate residents of Tennessee will pay a total of $13,264, and out-of-state students will pay $31,684. Graduate students will pay $13,380 if they’re from Tennessee or $31,798 if they’re from outside the state. Students in the law program will pay $20,168 if they’re in-state students or $38,842 if they’re from another state.
The law program also has a flexible schedule option that is $14,956 for in-state residents and $27,638 for out-of-state residents. Students in the veterinary medicine program will pay $29,336 if they’re from Tennessee or $56,602 if they’re from another state. Online program rates for undergraduates are $12,756 for in-state students and $14,556 for out-of-state students. Graduate programs online are $12,556 for in-state residents and $13,906 for out-of-state students.
Students who apply for financial aid may receive grants, scholarships, work-study awards, or loans, and those funds may be used for tuition and costs associated with attending the University of Tennessee. Students can also secure aid for study abroad sessions and summer classes, as well as qualify for tuition discounts via the consortium agreements the university holds.
Applicants will first submit a FAFSA form through the federal government’s official student financial aid site and may also need to submit additional documentation as part of the financial aid verification program that the government uses to maintain the accuracy of FAFSA form submissions.
