The University of North Texas (UNT) began in 1890, with 70 students taking classes in a small room above a hardware store in Denton, TX. Starting as a “Normal” school that produced teachers for children in the area, the school has grown into one of the largest and most prestigious universities in the country. The present-day student body of over 39,000 take courses to satisfy 230 different degree pathways including 105 undergraduate degrees, 88 master’s and 37 doctoral degree programs. Whereas intermediate Graduate-Level Certifications only require 12 to 15 credit hours to complete, master-level degrees at UNT require a minimum of 30 credit hours and a maximum of 36 credit hours. Those master-level degrees that do not require a capstone demand the completion of 36 credit hours of study. Capstones are projects that demonstrate the student’s understanding of the curriculum through the pursuance of a publishable paper that the student must defend before a committee.
UNT provides education at the doctoral level in 37 programs. One of those degrees is offered entirely online—Doctor of Philosophy in Learning Technologies—which prepares the student for careers as instructional coordinators or audio-visual and media collection specialists, which are highly prized and high paying positions throughout the country.

The University of North Texas Application Requirements
The admission process for the first-year student at UNT requires that each student submit an official high school transcript. All SAT or ACT scores must be sent to the UNT Admissions Office via the College Board or ACT organizations themselves.
Graduate school applicants to UNT programs must deliver/send their bachelor’s degree along with the transcripts from every higher education institution they attended. Every graduate degree at UNT is governed by the department in which the degree is housed. Every applicant must communicate with the department to find any additional application requirements they may need to satisfy.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The difference between Texas residents and out-of-state students in the tuition rates at UNT is significant. The tuition for a Texas resident is $1,500 per year, while for an out-of-state student the rate is $14,160. All other fees that the university charges students are equal between the in-state and out-of-state students. The difference reflects the amount of subsidy Texas provides for its students.
UNT offers every form of financial aid. The Financial Aid department helps students navigate the confusing area where financial assistance is located.
