The University of New Haven is composed of five different schools, which include the College of Arts and Sciences, the Pompea College of Business, the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, the Tagliatela College of Engineering, and the School of Health Sciences. Within these five schools, students have the option to choose from many different associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, and master’s degrees. Some of the various programs are design, art, fine arts, hospitality, sports, business, communications, media studies, film, cybersecurity, computer science, criminal justice, forensic science, engineering, humanities, social sciences, performing arts, music, national security, public service, natural sciences, and many more. In addition, students can earn a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, which is the University of New Haven’s only doctoral degree program.

The university also features online degree programs for individuals who want to earn a degree but are unable to commute to campus. The online programs provide flexibility and convenience to students with other life obligations. The University of New Haven is a private university that was established in the year 1920. It is located in West Haven Connecticut, which is less than 80 miles from the large city of New York. This university is considered a small college with an undergraduate population of around 5,000 students and a campus stretching across 80 acres of land. According to U.S. News & World Report, the University of New Haven ranks 28th for best undergraduate teaching, 38th for best colleges for veterans, 66th for best regional universities in the north, and 68th for best engineering programs. According to Niche, it ranks 16th for best value colleges in the state of Connecticut and 60th for best criminal justice program in the United States.

A unique feature of the University of New Haven is that every student is required to complete at least one experiential learning experience before they are approved for graduation, which can be an internship, research project, study abroad program, or an academic service-learning project. Students attending this university have the option of joining 100 different student clubs or organizations on campus, contributing to the student newspaper, or participating in one of the athletic sports teams. The student-athletes play in the NCAA Division 2 Northeast-10 Conference and are known as the “New Haven Chargers.”

Applicants may find that it is less competitive to receive admittance to the University of New Haven, as it possesses an 84 percent acceptance rate. Students who enroll at this university typically choose to major in criminal justice, forensic science, or psychology.

University of New Haven Accreditation Details

The University of New Haven has received its accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), a regional accrediting agency located in Bedford, Massachusetts. The NEASC provides accreditation to colleges and universities in six states, which are Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

University of New Haven Application Requirements

The undergraduate application process consists of filling out an application form, paying the $50 application fee, writing a 250-650-word essay, providing high school transcripts, submitting one recommendation letter from an academic teacher, and turning in SAT or ACT scores. Early decision applicants must also attend an interview and sign a contract.

The graduate application process consists of filling out an application form, paying the $50 application fee, providing college transcripts that show proof of bachelor’s degree, turning in two letters of recommendation from employers or past professors, writing a statement of purpose, submitting test scores (GRE or GMAT), and providing a resume. Ph.D. applicants must submit GRE scores, three letters of recommendation, a professional writing sample, and a statement of purpose. GMAT test scores may be waived for graduate applicants if they already possess a graduate degree or professional license, obtained at least a 3.3 undergraduate grade point average (GPA), or can show proof of at least five years of professional experience.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Full-time undergraduate students are estimated to pay $20,085 per semester, which equals to $40,170 per year. Graduate tuition varies by program. Graduate students pay an average of $965 per credit hour, but this rate may be more or less depending on the selected program.

All undergraduate applicants are considered for merit scholarships. The list below briefly describes the available merit scholarships that undergraduate students may receive:

  • The Presidential Scholarship provides $21,000 to $24,000 per student each year.
  • The Distinguished Scholar Award provides $15,000 to $20,000 per student each year.
  • The Charger Award provides $10,000 to $14,000 per student each year.
  • The Honors Scholarship provides $1,000 per student each year.

Graduate students have the opportunity to join an assistantship to earn financial assistance toward their selected degree program. The Provost’s assistantship program provides students with hands-on experience in researching and teaching. All students in the assistantship program must work at least 15 to 20 hours per week while maintaining good grades in each of their academic courses. Graduate students also can apply for the Dean’s Scholarship, which is based on academic achievements and performance.
