About the University of New England

The University of New England is a private university often called UNE. Established in 1831 as the Westbrook Seminary, it originally functioned as a high school for boys. The seminary later added a junior college to its campus and became College Seraphique. When the college gained approval from the state to award bachelor’s degrees in the 1950s, it changed its name again to St. Francis College. St. Francis College joined forces with the New England Foundation for Osteopathic Medicine and added an osteopathic medicine program to its curriculum. This would lead to the college becoming UNE. UNE has a main campus in Biddeford that is close to the Atlantic Ocean and a small campus in Portland, Maine. A third campus opened in 2014 in Tangier, Morocco that offers programs for local students and study abroad opportunities for students from other campuses.

University of New England Accreditation Details

UNE students of all ages and levels can use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and get help paying their tuition and other expenses. They can use this form because of the regional accreditation UNE has, which comes from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) and the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) both accredited the university’s public health and social work programs.

University of New England Application Requirements

UNE has an early action deadline of December first and a final deadline of February 15. Though students must meet the same requirements by either deadline, the early action process lets them get a faster response. They just need to apply online and pay the university’s $40 application fee and then send their high school transcripts. UNE has a test-optional policy that only asks students to provide a standardized test score if they believe that it will strengthen their applications. The university has agreements with five local high schools that allow students to take college classes and transfer their credits to UNE. Students who qualify for this program only need to take three years of classes to complete a bachelor’s degree.

Prospective UNE graduate students need to meet the requirements set by each department or program. The application becomes available in the middle of summer and usually has a final deadline around the beginning of February. Students need a bachelor’s degree and a transcript that shows they earned a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and that they took any required prerequisites. Programs may ask for three professional and/or academic references, a resume, a personal essay, and a GRE score. Students accepted into any degree program also need to make an enrollment deposit.

Tuition and Financial Aid

UNE undergrads pay $37,390 every year for tuition and $1,360 in fees. The average amount that they pay for their room and board costs is $14410 per year. Some programs charge additional fees of $50 or more each semester, including those in social work and athletic training. Undergrads who need financial aid can submit the FAFSA with the UNE school code. This helps them qualify for both institutional and government aid. UNE offers scholarships and grants and can find state and federal grants for students too. They can also use this form to get loans or to qualify for work-study.

Graduate students pay different rates for residential and online programs. Those in an MSW program pay $950 per credit hour and $700 in miscellaneous fees every year. They pay another $50 for malpractice insurance that covers their fieldwork. Most of the university’s online graduate programs charge $580 per credit hour and $170 in fees each semester. Residential students can apply for work-study and get one of the graduate assistant jobs available on-campus. This provides them with tuition help and a stipend. They may qualify for grants and student loans also. All degree programs available at the University of New England help students get the financial aid that they need.
