University of Massachusetts-Amherst Accreditation Details

UMass Amherst is formally accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (CIHE) of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), but many of the university’s colleges are also given the stamp of approval by discipline-specific associations. Business programs are approved by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Engineering and computer science degrees are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Education programs have been approved by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Nursing degrees are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) too.

University of Massachusetts-Amherst Application Requirements

Admissions for incoming freshmen at UMass Amherst is highly selective and will be contingent upon whether students have successfully completed high school courses at a consistently high level. All freshmen applicants must be earning or have received a high school diploma with four units of English, three units of mathematics, three units of natural science, two units of social science, and two units of foreign language. Freshmen will be asked to submit a common application with official high school transcripts, SAT and/or ACT scores, a letter of recommendation, and a $75 application fee.

Undergraduate students wishing to attend UMass Amherst after completing at least one year of college coursework will be admitted based on their academic record. Transfer students must have successfully maintained a minimum overall GPA of 2.7 in full-time college academics. Students who have completed an associate’s degree with a GPA of 2.5 or higher are also guaranteed admission through MassTransfer. All transfer students are required to immediately declare a major and be admissible to that major program.

For graduate degree programs, UMass Amherst requires that incoming students hold an accredited bachelor’s degree earned in the United States or a comparable non-U.S. degree. International students who do not hold U.S. permanent resident states may also be admitted if they’ve completed undergraduate coursework in America. It’s preferred that graduate students have maintained a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 in their last two years. Applicants to certain programs may also need to submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) scores.

Students may begin registering for online courses after being formally admitted into their certificate or degree program of choice. There’s no campus residency requirement, but it’s important to note that online students residing in Alabama, Arkansas, and Kansas cannot be accepted due to lack of authorization by state law. It’s also recommended that online students have personal access to a desktop or laptop computer with at least a 56 kbps Internet modem and a Java capable browser.

Tuition and Financial Aid

At the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, it’s estimated that in-state students will pay $13,906 in tuition costs each year. Out-of-state students can expect to pay $30,216 on an annual basis for tuition expenses. Thanks to the Tuition Break Program, UMass Amherst students residing in New England outside of Massachusetts pay $23,278 annually. Undergraduate students must provide a one-time $135 entering fee and graduate students must pay a one-time $357 service fee too. Fees for each online program will be listed in the class description, but online students must also pay a non-refundable registration fee of $45 per term.

For help covering these costs, there are several financial aid options available at UMass Amherst for students who complete the FAFSA form. In addition to loans, students may be qualified for receiving the Federal Pell Grant, FSEOG Grant, TEACH Grant, or other grants offered by the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education. Incoming students at UMass Amherst are automatically considered for more than 100 scholarships, including the $5,000 Academic Honors Scholarship and full-tuition National Merit Scholarship.
