The University of Idaho offers more than 300 degrees for undergraduate and graduate students, and many of those degrees are available online. Degrees are offered by several colleges within the university that include Agricultural and Life Sciences, Art and Architecture, Business and Economics, and Education, Health, and Human Sciences.
Students also take classes from the Colleges of Engineering, Graduate Studies, Law, Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences, National Resources, and Science. The university operates two libraries within the university and its College of Law, and students may also enroll in distance and extended education programs from a variety of departments.
Some of the most popular majors for students at the university include those in psychology, marketing, mechanical engineering, business administration, and finance. The university has a freshman retention rate of 80 percent, and the student-to-faculty ratio is 15:1. More than 55 percent of the university’s classes have fewer than 20 students.
The university has four options for online study that include certificate programs, individual courses, undergraduate programs, and graduate degrees. Certificates available from the university include those in analog integrated circuit design, environmental education, human resource development, geographic information systems, organizational dynamics, and statistics.
Students interested in earning complete undergraduate degrees will choose from the topics of communication, history, psychology, sociology with a criminology emphasis, organizational sciences, and general studies. Students who decide to enroll in graduate degree programs will choose from degrees in engineering, education, the social sciences, physical sciences, and natural resources.
A selection of graduate degrees available online includes the Master of Science in Environmental Science, the Master of Engineering in Technology Management, the Master of Teaching in Teaching Mathematics, and the Master of Public Administration. Beyond complete degree programs, students can also enroll in off-campus courses, dual credit programs, and summer classes through the university’s distance and extended education.
One of the interesting options for study is the selection of independent study courses, which are a selection of more than 100 online courses that students can take up to a year to finish. Students can use independent study to finish their degrees on a convenient schedule.
About the University of Idaho
The University of Idaho is a public university located in Moscow, Idaho, that was established in 1889. The university is the most important research university in the state and also has the largest campus with a total of 1,585 acres. The university’s official colors are silver and gold, and the total student body population is around 11,500. The school has status as a land grant and space-grant institution. The university’s endowment is more than $281 million.
The university operates three branch campuses in Boise, Idaho Falls, and Coeur d’Alene and also has a research park in the city of Post Falls. Smaller extension offices affiliated with the university are found across the state. University of Idaho Accreditation Details
The University of Idaho is regionally accredited as an institution of higher education by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. The university first gained accreditation in 1918 and reaffirms that status every ten years. The institution undergoes periodic reviews every few years. Specialized accreditations also exist for many of the programs offered by the university in areas like business, engineering, journalism, and chemistry.
Some of the organizations that have accredited programs at the university include the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the American Bar Association, and the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Additional accreditations have been earned from the Association for Fire Ecology, the American Chemical Society, and the Accreditation Council on Education in Nutrition and Dietetics.
University of Idaho Application Requirements
Applicants for first-year study at the University of Idaho who have graduated or will graduate from a regionally accredited high school will submit the $60 application fee, an application for admission, standardized test scores, and high school transcripts. The transcript submitted must show the student’s graduation date. Students must also submit transcripts from previously attended colleges. Students who have earned a GED or completed high school via homeschooling are welcome to apply for admission.
Students interested in graduate programs at the University of Idaho will need to check with the program to which they want to apply for admissions requirements. Programs may have varying grade point average (GPA) requirements and letters of recommendation required. Students applying to graduate programs must be able to show proof of having earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. International applicants must be able to supply evidence of having earned an equivalent degree.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition at the University of Idaho is based on the residency status of the student, his or her degree level, and the number of credits taken. Students enrolled full time who are Idaho residents, as well as students enrolled in online courses, will pay $4,152 for tuition. Part-time enrollment is $415 per credit. Non-residents will pay $13,770 for tuition if they attend full time or $1,377 per credit if they enroll in part-time study. Some programs may require that students pay some additional fees.
For graduate students, the tuition rate for Idaho residents and students registered for online classes is $4,938 for full-time enrollment or $549 per credit for part-time study. Non-residents will pay $14,556 for full time classes or part-time tuition fo $1,618 per credit. Like students enrolled in undergraduate programs, some graduate students may need to pay additional fees.
Students who want to apply for financial aid will do so through Student Financial Aid Services at the university. New students must submit a FAFSA form online to qualify for financial aid and must resubmit the form each year to maintain financial aid awards. The university has a helpful program known as Better Education About Money for Students (BEAMS) that can help students learn more about financing their education.
Students may receive loans, scholarships, work-study awards, or grants to help them pay for tuition and the costs associated with attending the university. Students who want to receive student loans may need to submit financial information for their household income. Some students may qualify for institutional scholarships when they attend the University of Idaho, with no additional scholarship applications required.
