About Oregon State University

In 1856, the Corvallis Academy, the first community school in the area, opened under the direction of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Under the Morrill Act, which the school accepted in 1868, 90,000 acres were provided to be used for an endowment or as a campus for a college that focused on agricultural, mechanical and military arts.

Even though it was designated as a land-grant institution, the school struggled financially as the land they were selling to open the school did not sell as quickly as they expected. However, in 1871, they were able to purchase a 35-acre farm using funds donated by local citizens. The school continued to be administered by the Methodist Episcopal Church until 1881 and the state assumed full control in 1885. Additional funds were provided by an additional Morrill Act and the Hatch Act, allowing the Academy to create the Agricultural Experimental Station in 1888.

Today, more than 32,000 students attend Oregon State University which is ranked as one of the top universities in the world.
