About Idaho State University

Idaho State University is a public university that serves as both a junior and senior college. Established in 1901 as the Academy of Idaho, it grew out of an act of legislature and the donations or private land from locals in Pocatello. The academy became the Idaho Technical Institute in 1915 and the University of Idaho – Southern Branch in 1927. As a small branch of the University of Idaho, the campus offered only associate degree and career training programs. After splitting from that university in the early 1960s, it became Idaho State University or ISU. In a nod to its early years as a junior college, the university still offers two-year degree programs and allows students to transition to a bachelor’s program when they complete their studies. Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, and Meridian are home to small campuses in the ISU system, which helped enrollment climb to more than 12,000.

Idaho State University Accreditation Details

With accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), ISU can award financial aid packages to all students who need help. That is because this is the regional accreditation required of the United States Department of Education for students to use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Some of the accreditation that the university holds for its degree programs comes from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and other organizations.

Idaho State University Application Requirements

Prospective ISU undergrads need a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and a score of 18 on the ACT or 1030 on the SAT. Those who graduated from an Idaho high school need to submit transcripts that show they completed the state’s core curriculum for college students. The university will accept students who completed a similar curriculum at a high school outside of the state. They need to pay a $50 application fee and provide their transcripts and scores. ISU waives the application fee for students who graduated from a high school in the state. It has similar requirements for students applying with a GED and those who studied at home.

Graduate students need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, with most programs asking that students studied a similar field in college. Those with a GPA of 3.5 or higher do not need to submit any other information. Students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher need to submit a MAT or GRE score. The university does not accept those with a GPA of below 2.5. The scores that students need to meet will vary based on their grades. ISU has a final application deadline of April first each year and charges a $60 application fee. Some programs will also ask for one or more letters of recommendation.

Tuition and Financial Aid

ISU undergrads pay $3,936 each semester or $7,872 every year for both their fees and tuition. Undergrads who are not from Idaho pay $24,168 each year in tuition and fees. Students pay another $1,489 for a dorm room and $1,718 for a meal plan each semester if they reside on the university’s campus. Graduate students pay the same rates for their meal plans and dorm rooms. They also pay fees and tuition of $4,962 if they are Idaho residents and $13,110 if they are nonresidents each semester.

Any student who needs financial aid and submits the FAFSA can get a package from the university. Undergraduate financial aid packages usually include loans, work-study, and grants. To apply for scholarships, students must use the Bengal Online Scholarship System and verify the information they share on the application. ISU offers waivers for some nonresidents that bring their tuition down to what Idaho residents pay and scholarships for graduate students who show need on the FAFSA. Undergrads can qualify for scholarships and other special programs based on their merit or need. Idaho State University has a deadline of February 15 for students in any degree programs who apply for scholarships and other types of financial aid.
