Hofstra University is one of the higher education options available to students on Long Island. Founded in 1935, it opened as Nassau College – Hofstra Memorial of New York and served as an extension campus associated with New York University. A wealthy widow left behind money in her will as well as a large piece of property for the construction of a new college and asked that the school name itself after her husband, William Hofstra, in his honor. When classes opened that same year, all students were commuters who made the trek to the campus daily. Many of its classes met later in the day and at night to accommodate the needs of students who worked and had other commitments. The school split from NYU at the end of the 1930s and gained its own charter in 1940 that let it operate under the name of Hofstra College. The college gained university status in the 1960s and became the first college on Long Island and one of the first in the state to make its campus accessible to those with handicaps and disabilities.

The university’s growth over the years led to a current enrollment rate of more than 11,000 students, and this figure includes more than 4,300 graduate students. A large number of its grad students either enroll in its online programs or take one or more classes through the online system. U.S. News & World Report, Forbes and Washington Monthly rank Hofstra University as one of the top colleges in America. New York Times included the school on a list of the world’s best schools also.

The university has other applications available for those who want to study business, nursing, occupational therapy and select other fields. These applications ask for general background information and about the colleges that students attended in the past. Select departments may ask for a resume, writing sample, standardized test score or other information too.

The online system that the university uses makes it easier for students to submit other required documents too. They can upload a transcript through the system that shows their class rankings, grades and total grade point average. This system will also accept the letters of recommendation that students receive from their employers or professors. Those accepted will need to log in and pay a deposit. This deposit tells the university that the student plans to attend and holds a spot in the program for the next semester. It can take a few weeks or longer for a department to make a final decision on a student’s application.
