Georgia Southern University began in 1908 as the First District Agricultural & Mechanical School that opened its doors with the goal of teaching modern agricultural techniques as well as homemaking skills to children in rural areas. As enrollment grew, the college added courses designed to educate teachers to meet the growing need for trained educators in Georgia. In 1924, the name of the school was changed to the Georgia Normal School.

Although the school focused on educating teachers, they continued to accept preparatory students at the high school level. In 1929, the school was granted senior college status and renamed South Georgia Teacher’s College. In 1939, the name again changed to Georgia Teacher’s College and it became Georgia Southern College in 1959. The school gained university status in 1990.

Today, Georgia Southern University is the largest and most comprehensive university in south Georgia. There are almost 21,000 students enrolled, attending from every state in the country.
