East Tennessee State University is split into 11 colleges and schools that host 140 unique programs at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels. Students can choose to participate in a range of offerings that suit their academic pursuits. While East Tennessee State University hosts a wealth of programs on campus, the online program is just as accommodating. Some virtual options include a (BPS) Bachelor of Professional Studies with a concentration in Information Technology where students will participate in courses such as Special Topics and Leadership, Principles of Management, Introduction to Nonprofit Organizations and Organizational Theory & Behavior. Other bachelor’s degrees that can be obtained are a (BPS) Bachelor of Professional Studies with a concentration in Organizational Leadership or a B.S. in Science with a concentration in Interdisciplinary Studies. This focus gives students the opportunity to further understand the importance of personal growth as it pertains to professional maturity. Students can choose to pursue one of two concentration areas within this major as an official minor. A B.S. in Science exposes students to a range of philosophies and perspectives for a well-rounded experience. Courses within this program of study include general education and guided electives. The culmination of the degree is a senior status project.
For students seeking a master’s degree, ETSU offers programs such as an M.A. in Appalachian Studies, an M.A. in Brand and Media Strategy and an M.A. in Communication & Storytelling Studies to name a few. If completing a graduate’s degree on campus is not your primary option, ETSU offers a library of virtual options including certificate options such as an M.A. in Early Childhood Education, and M.S.N in Nursing, an Ed.D. in Global Sport Leadership and certificates in athletic administration, community college leadership, and epidemiology. With an (MPS) Master of Professional Studies with a concentration in Strategic Leadership, graduate students can take courses such as Foundation of Leadership, Globalization and the Professions and Small Group Leadership. This program is the advanced version of an interdisciplinary degree and provides students with a more in-depth curriculum that acts as a preparation for a professional environment that serves a plethora of fields such as social services, education, technology, and government.
About East Tennessee State University
East Tennessee State University was first founded in 1911. When the school first opened its doors, it hosted 29 students and offered two programs of study. The first students could either participate in a four-year curriculum or a two-year curriculum at the high school level. The established departments included English, history, languages, agriculture and industrial learning. Later on, in the same year, music and art departments were added. ETSU was originally regarded as East Tennessee State Normal School. In 1913, the school added Latin and Domestic Science programs to the curriculum. By 1915, the first Alumni Association was established. A year later, the department of music began offering courses in voice, piano, and violin. ETSU continued to create more departments as physical education and penmanship were inaugurated. The university steadily continued to expand and by 1922 Taylor Hall was raised and the gymnasium completed construction.
In 1925, East Tennessee State Normal School changed its name to East Tennessee State Teacher’s College. That year, East Tennessee State Teacher’s College hosted the very first homecoming and in 1926 the first graduates received their degrees. East Tennessee received another name change in 1930 and was regarded as State Teachers College, Johnson City. Enrollment in that year climbed to 1,420 students. In 1940, East Tennessee saw a graduating class of 70 students, which was the largest one thus far. In 1943, ETSU officially became East Tennessee State College and by 1949 ETSU’s graduate college was introduced and by 1951 the first master’s degree was awarded. By 1961, ETSU’s enrollment was at 5,000 students with 2,000 first-yeat students enrolled in 1962. ETSU’s medical school enrolled its first 24 students in 1978 and the schools of public health and nursing were inaugurated. Four years later in 1982, the first medical degrees were officially awarded. In 1987, student enrollment was 10,198 and in 1998 it grew to 12,000. In 2010, student enrollment surpassed 15,000 students.

East Tennessee State University Application Requirements
First-year students seeking admissions at ETSU must submit a completed application and pay a $25 application fee, satisfactory high school transcripts, an SAT or ACT score of 470-540 for Reading & Writing and 450-590 for Math or a 20-26, a housing application, a meal plan application, and health forms. Graduate students seeking admissions must submit college transcripts, a minimum GPA of 3.0, three letters of recommendation, a personal essay with a minimum of 300 words, and an application fee of $55.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate students who are residents of the state of Tennessee can expect tuition of $17,719. This price includes housing and meals. Students who are not Tennessee state residents will pay a tuition of $36,901 including housing and meals. For graduate students, in-state tuition is $10,315, and out of state tuition is $25,453. An estimated 87% of ETSU students receive financial aid.
