About Cornell University

Named for Ezra Cornell who created the university in 1865 using the money he earned as the largest stockholder of Western Union, Cornell University was the first land-grant institution created after the Morrill Act was passed in 1862. Classes began in 1868 as bells rang to signal the opening of the school. In 1873, the bells, which then numbered 21, were placed in McGraw Tower and they still ring each day.

In 1868, nine bells rang out from the ground to signal the start of classes. In 1873, they were placed in McGraw Tower and expanded to 21 bells. They ring daily, making them the largest and most frequently played chimes in the world. From the beginning, Cornell was a technologically innovative institution. The school applied its own research to its campus. It was one of the first university campuses to use electricity from a water-powered dynamo. It continues to administer research jointly funded by state and matching programs.
