California Institute of Technology, commonly referred to as Caltech, is a private, non-profit university residing in Pasadena, California. It is one of the few schools of technology in the nation that is mainly concerned with teaching applied sciences and technical arts. It is considered a world-renowned science and engineering institute. It strives to develop the overall knowledge and well-being of society through research-based education. Caltech evaluates complex issues in science and technology in an interdisciplinary environment while providing outstanding education to enable students to become successful and creative members of the community. Caltech is home to six academic areas with a major focus on science and engineering. Amos G. Throop established Caltech in 1891 as a preparatory and vocational institution. Before becoming the California Institute of Technology, the school operated as Throop University, Throop College of Technology, and Throop Polytechnic Institute. In 1921, the school acquired its current name. In 2012, Caltech started to offer open online courses. Today, Caltech is home to about 1,000 undergraduate students and 1,250 graduate students, and with 300 professional faculty members, it has one of the lowest student to faculty ratios in the country at 3:1. Every ten years, Caltech goes through evaluation to attain regional accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Tuition and Financial Aid
The estimated full-time tuition for undergraduate students is $65,874, which includes tuition, fees, room and board, meal allowance, books and supplies, and personal expenses. Caltech prides itself on its abundance of financial aid and scholarship awards available to students.
Every year, almost 60 percent of undergraduate students receive some type of financial aid. The majority of aid granted to Caltech undergraduate students is from grants. The grants include the Federal Pell Grant and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. The Cal Grant is available to California residents and Caltech accepts various grants from other states. The institution also awards Caltech Scholarships and the award is based on demonstrated financial need. Caltech also participates in named scholarships and outside scholarships. The loan programs include Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Stafford Loans, Federal PLUS Loans, Caltech Loan, and private loans. Students are also able to participate in the Federal Work Study program.

The areas include a large range of topics including materials science, mathematical biology, fluid mechanics, engineering applications, and mathematical finance. Examples of required courses include differential equations, introduction to probability and statistics, introduction to computer programming, classical analysis, applied linear algebra, methods of applied mathematics, and mathematical optimization. The program offers a wide range of research opportunities for students to gain practical experience in the field.
The chemical engineering program is designed to provide education to students who seek to pursue chemical engineering careers or proceed to graduate programs. It strives to prepare students to become leaders in the engineering, science, business, public service, and education fields to make a significant impact on the ever-changing world. It provides a broad and rigorous curriculum in chemical engineering and students have the ability to select one of four tracks: biomolecular, materials, environmental, or process systems. Examples of required courses include chemical synthesis and characterization for chemical engineering, organic chemistry, chemical engineering thermodynamics, chemical reaction engineering, dynamics and control of chemical systems, and physical chemistry.
Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics
The graduate program in biochemistry and molecular biophysics is an interdisciplinary program that combines biology, chemistry, and physics that strives to understand the chemistry of life. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in biochemistry and biophysics of macromolecules and molecular assemblies. It also provides students with in-depth understanding in a selected field for thesis research. The program requires students to first choose and advisor and laboratory rotations. During the first year, students complete three core courses in biochemistry and biophysics of macromolecules and molecular assemblies. Students must also complete three additional advanced courses in particular research interests. They choose three laboratories to complete short research activities. At the end of the second year, students complete an oral examination to evaluate the mastery of the field and assess research progress. Then for the duration of the program, students work on their thesis and research and at the end defend their work in a thesis seminar. The California Institute of Technology offers graduate students a wide range of additional hands-on opportunities, such as seminars and workshops.
