About Appalachian State University

Appalachian State University is a traditional, four-year university located in Boone, North Carolina. The school was founded in 1899 by Blanford B. Dougherty. It was originally called the Watauga Academy with a focus on children. It soon became a college for teachers called Appalachian Training School for Teachers.

In 1967, the school officially became a four-year university that offered undergraduate and graduate degrees. Today, Appalachian State focuses on traditional offerings as well as online degrees. Over 19,000 students attend the school through its daytime and online campuses.

Appalachian State University Application Requirements

Undergraduate students who wish to apply to Appalachian State University’s online campus may do so by completing the online application. Each program of study has unique requirements for admission. Some require applicants to pass a criminal background check before classes may begin. Many have entrance exams that must be completed and passed prior to admission.

All online undergraduate applicants must have 30 hours of previous college experience that is transferable to the institution. Any student that is not sure if he or she can attend based on previous experience may complete a Pre-Application Evaluation form. Along with the application, applicants to the online campus must provide official high school and college transcripts, college entrance test scores, a residency determination (if the student is a North Carolina resident) and a $65 application fee. Students must have a minimum of a 2.25 cumulative GPA.

A first-time college freshman may be eligible to attend the online campus if he or she can provide adequate proof of excellent GPA, SAT or ACT scores and any evidence of attempted college-level coursework.

Graduate students who wish to apply to the university’s online campus must meet the requirements for the chosen field of study. These requirements vary depending on the specific degree the applicant is seeking. All graduate programs require entrance test scores, proof of an undergraduate degree and transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended.

Students who wish to attend the traditional campus must complete an online application, pay the standard application fee, provide high school and any college transcripts and submit SAT or ACT scores.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition for undergraduate online courses is about $163 per credit hour for North Carolina residents. Students who are not North Carolina residents are charged the out-of-state fee, which is roughly $660 per credit hour. Graduate students who are North Carolina residents must pay about $266 per credit hour. Out-of-state graduate students pay $925 for each credit hour. These charges cover tuition, education and technology fees, safety and security fees and the ASG fee.

Students who attend Appalachian State University’s online campus are eligible to apply for federal financial aid. All students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to determine eligibility for grants, loans, and some scholarships. There are also scholarships available from some students. Applicants may apply for need-based and merit scholarships that vary in amounts from about $2,000 to the entire cost of in-state tuition. These students are also charged for Student Medical Insurance, Orientation, Parking Permits, Book Rentals, Wellness Services, Technology Equipment and any additional expenses that the students may choose, such as internships and study abroad experiences.
