About Andrews University

Andrews University is a private university affiliated with the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Founded in 1874 by the Church as Battle Creek College, it took its name from Battle Creek, Michigan, which was the original location of its campus. The college moved to Berrien Springs around the turn of the century and changed its name to Emmanuel Missionary College. This college would take over the operations of multiple schools that existed in the area at the time, including the Training School for Nurses and the School of Home Economics. Those schools would help its enrollment among young women grow. It would later add a theological seminary to its curriculum before becoming Andrews University in 1959.

The university now consists of seven colleges and schools, including the Seventh-Day Adventist Theological Seminary, School of Education and College of Arts and Sciences. Its School of Distance Education and International Partnerships allows students to take online classes and sign up for study abroad programs. It is one of the only colleges affiliated with the Seventh-Day Adventist Church to have full accreditation. Enrollment at Andrews University now includes more than 3,300 students at the undergrad, graduate and seminary levels.

HLC accreditation means that Andrews students using the FAFSA can get any of the financial aid given to them from the government and that they can transfer college credits from this university to another college. They can also bring credits to the university too. Andrews University also has accreditation for its nursing, physical therapy, music, speech and language, dietetics and education programs. The Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) granted the university accreditation for its online programs too.

Andrews University Application Requirements

Undergrads applying to Andrews University only need to complete three steps to finish the appearance process. They will submit an application online by July 15 to start in the fall or November 15 to start in the spring. This application uses a new system that does not charge a fee. It includes a section where students will list two references and the contact information for each one. The university asks for references who are not related to the student such as a guidance counselor or a high school teacher. Undergrads should also submit a score from the ACT, SAT or PSAT and their official transcripts. They can then wait to get a response from the university.

Graduate students will follow a similar process. They must create a new account with the application website and fill out that application. This system allows them to submit their applications for free, but it also lets them work on any section when they want and pause the application process. Grad students must also submit a GRE score and their transcripts. The university requires minimum GRE scores of 140 on both the verbal and quantitative reasoning sections of the test and 3.0 on the writing section. Each Andrews program has the right to set other requirements, including asking for a writing sample, resume or references. Students applying to any of the university’s online programs must meet the same requirements for undergrad or graduate admissions.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergrads attending Andrews University will pay $14,136 each semester. They can take up to 16 credits for this same rate before they face an overcharge fee. Students also pay more than $4,100 each semester for room and board, though the university offers some room and board packages that cost more or less. Those who need health insurance can get coverage for an extra $1,461 per year. The university offers coverage for students with dependents too. Undergrads taking online classes pay $395 per credit hour, which is the same rate that students from other schools pay to take classes as a guest. Most graduate students pay $1,106 per credit hour except those in a graduate education program who pay $1,284 per credit hour.

The Andrews Partnership Scholarship is a scholarship program offered by the university that awards qualifying undergrads with between $6,000 and $12,000 a year. Students can renew their prizes each year if they maintain a full course load and a high grade point average. Qualifying students must have an ACT score of at least 30 or a minimum SAT score of 1330. The university offers other scholarships based on the need, merit or skills of incoming students. Both undergrads and graduate students attending Andrews can use the FAFSA and get financial aid too. The FAFSA determines what loans graduate students can get and if undergrads qualify for the federal work-study program or for government grants. Andrews University allows both traditional and online students to use a variety of financial aid options to pay for its degree programs.
