The Master of Science in Agricultural Education is a 36-credit hour program with a thesis option available. Most courses are offered online, delivered through the Interactive Video Conferencing system. Students must have a bachelor’s degree or higher in order to enroll. Completion time varies per individual as students are not required to take a certain number of courses each semester. The program prepares students for leadership positions in the field of agriculture education.
The online Master of Science in Human Development and Family Studies is provided through a partnership with the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance, a consortium of universities that have come together to offer online graduate degrees to students who have barriers to attending traditional campus classrooms. The program is 36-credit hours and all coursework is completed online. Students study the physical, mental and social changes as people age as well as investigate the changes in society that results due to an aging population. Students also learn to apply knowledge to policies and programs.
The Master of Science in Software Engineering is a 36-credit hour non-thesis program with all courses being completed online. Students must have a bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering or the equivalent. Students who do not have such degrees may be required to take leveling courses. Students are provided a firm foundation in the definition, development, and maintenance of complex software systems using traditional engineering process methods.
About Texas Tech University
Texas Tech began in 1923 by an action of the Texas legislature. Originally known as Texas Technical College, the school opened in 1925 with six buildings and an enrollment of 914. The region covered by the school is larger than 46 of the nation’s 50 states, comprising two-thirds of the state of Texas. Graduate studies were added to the Liberal Arts Department in 1935 and eventually became the Graduate School in 1954.
The call to create an institute of higher learning in West Texas began almost as soon as settlers arrived in the area in 1880. In 1917, legislation passed to create a branch of Texas A&M in Abilene, but it was repealed two years later when it was discovered that Governor James E. Ferguson had falsely stated where the committee chose to locate the branch. In 1921, legislation again passed but was vetoed by Governor Pat Neff who felt that West Texas was undergoing hard financial times and could not afford the college. The veto so angered residents that there were recommendations that West Texas secede from the state.
By 1960, the school had expanded to more than just technical subjects. Today, there are more than 35,000 students enrolled at Texas Tech in 150 undergraduate, 100 master’s and 50 doctoral programs. Programs are offered through ten colleges as well as the Graduate School and School of Law.
Texas Tech Accreditation Details
Texas Tech is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Specific programs at the college may be accredited by other accrediting agencies as well. Accreditation indicates that Texas Tech meets the shared values and practices among diverse institutions in 11 states and Latin America. Accrediting agencies assure that the educational quality at the university is exceptional. In addition, the agency assists in improving the effectiveness of member institutions like Texas Tech.
Texas Tech Application Requirements
Undergraduate students attending Texas Tech immediately after high school graduation must complete an online application and pay the applicable fee. Students must provide official transcripts as well as SAT and ACT scores. Students must have successfully completed four units in English, math, and science as well as two units of Foreign Language. Additional information used to approve an application to Texas Tech include, but are not limited to:

- Civic or other service activities
- Socioeconomic background
- Family educational background
- Special talents or awards
- Diversity of experience and background
Transfer students must also complete the online application and pay the applicable fee. They must provide official transcripts from every college or university attended. If the student is transferring less than 12 credits from another institute of higher learning, they must also provide ACT/SAT scores as well as official high school transcripts. Those who have completed more than 12 hours are asked to provide high school transcripts for advising purposes only.
Graduate students must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university. International students must have completed a degree program from a recognized equivalent college or university. International students must also provide proof of English equivalency. Many departments have additional requirements for admission to graduate programs, so students are encouraged to discuss those requirements with an admissions counselor.
Texas Tech Tuition and Financial Aid
Full-time tuition at Texas Tech for Texas residents is $9,866 for undergraduate students, $8,203 for graduate students and $23,262 for law students. Those who live in the border states of New Mexico or Oklahoma pay $10,766 for undergraduate tuition. Non-resident undergraduate tuition is $20,726, graduate tuition is $15,443 and law tuition is $33.222.
