About Missouri University of Science and Technology

Missouri University of Science and Technology was founded as one of the first technological institutes of higher learning west of the Mississippi in 1870. The school was originally founded as the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy and was initially focused on those subjects. Founded as part of the Morrill Act under the University of Missouri, the federal government granted 30,000 acres of land for each of the state’s senators and representatives, 330,000 in total, allowing the state to sell the land for at least $1.25 per acre in order to create an endowment for institutes of higher learning in the state.

The first classes were held in 1871 at Rolla High School with an enrollment of 28 students. In 1875, the school purchased the high school building, which is still known as the Rolla Building. In 1964, the school became a standalone campus and was renamed the University of Missouri at Rolla. In 2008, the name of the school was again changed to the Missouri University of Science & Technology.
