Indiana State University offers more than 60 programs that are completely online or that require minimal campus presence. Students can earn associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees as well as certificates online. These courses are taught by the same faculty that teaches the traditional courses. At Indiana State University many of the online degrees have customizable components to make them flexible in form as well as in scheduling.
The Bachelor of Applied Science in Technology is for students who have an Associate Degree in Applied Science and want to further their education. It is customized to meet the needs of the student and can be specialized in Automotive Technology Management, Construction Management or Human Resources Development. The program contains 39 credit-hours. Fifteen of those are in technology core classes and twenty-four are in the specialization.
The Bachelor of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice is taught by a multi-disciplinary faculty with degrees in criminal justice, jurisprudence, sociology and psychology. The program contains 36 hours in the major core along with six hours of electives in addition to the university general education coursework. There is also an internship required.
The Bachelor of Science in General Studies is a program that allows students to design their own degrees. Students who enter this degree path must have previously earned a minimum of 75 credits to be admitted to this program. The degree is designed for transfer students and contains 31-49 credit hours depending upon courses selected. Students must complete a minor and specified upper -level courses or a second minor. The degree program culminates in a capstone experience.
Students can earn a Master of Science degree – Family Nurse Practitioner track online. This program consists of 47-50 credit hours depending upon which culminating experience is chosen. There are no campus visits required, but students complete 675 clinical hours at a placement in the state where they are licensed.

About Indiana State University
Indiana State University is a public coeducational university in Terre Haute, Indiana. It was founded in 1865 as Indiana State Normal School. The college sought to prepare students to become elementary and high school teachers. In 1908 the school awarded its first four-year degree, and in 1928 it conferred its first master’s degree. It became Indiana State Teacher’s College in 1929 and Indiana State University in 1965.
The school, with a total enrollment of 13,565 students, traditionally focuses on public service. In 2013, it was named the national Non-Profit Leadership Campus of the Year. School sports teams were known as “the Fighting Teachers,” when the university was a normal school. They adopted the name “Sycamores” because of all the sycamore trees in the area, but trees make poor mascots. In 1989 students created a fictional character, Chief Ouabachi, to represent school teams.
The university is comprised of seven colleges: Bayh College of Education; Donald W. Scott College of Business; College of Graduate and Professional Studies; College of Arts and Sciences; College of Technology; College of Health and Human Services and the University College. The university awards undergraduate degrees in more than 80 programs and offers more than 75 graduate and professional programs along with more than 100 minors, certifications and licensures. The US News & World Report ranks Indiana State University in the second tier of National Universities. The student-to-faculty ratio is 21:1 and more than 64 percent of classes have fewer than 30 students. One of the unique features of the school is the University College. This is a unique educational program that helps freshmen transition from high school to college learning styles. It offers advising and courses designed to develop work ethics, study habits and more.
Indiana State University Accreditation Details
The university has been continuously accredited by The Higher Learning Commission since 1915. The Scott College of Business is accredited by the Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business, and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education accredits The Bayh School of Education programs. The PsyD program is accredited by the American Psychological Association. The National Association of Schools of Music accredits the music programs at Indiana State University. Both the master’s and the bachelor’s degrees in Social Work are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, and the nursing programs at the university are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Nursing Education. Graduate and undergraduate programs in athletic training are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education.
Indiana State University Application Requirements
Students applying to Indiana State University should do so through the online portal. Undergraduate applications should include official high school transcripts and the transcripts of any post-secondary coursework completed. Students should arrange to have the scores of their ACT or SAT tests sent directly to the school. Military students must complete the forms appropriate to their status. There is a non-refundable undergraduate application fee of $25. Those applying to the nursing programs or those students who are veterans or current military personnel must complete specific applications.
Online students should verify program availability before applying because not all programs are available in every state. Graduate students should be aware that Applied Medicine and Rehabilitation, Psychology, Social Work, Communications Disorders and some other programs require specific applications. Students must apply to graduate programs through the online application and submit a $45 non-refundable application fee. They should arrange to have the official transcripts of all undergraduate coursework they have completed and the official scores of their GMAT or GRE tests sent to the school too. Most students entering the Indiana State University will do so through the University College, but about 40 percent of students will qualify for direct admission directly into the degree program they have chosen.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate tuition at Indiana State University is $8,546 annually. The school estimates students will spend $1,200 on books and supplies, $200 on fees in addition to those mandated, $9,883 on room and board and an additional $2,308 on miscellaneous expenses. The estimated undergraduate cost-of-attendance at the school is $21,920 per year. Graduate tuition is $404 per credit hour plus fees. Online students pay $513 per credit hour plus $50 per course, but estimated semester costs are $5,535.
College is a big financial investment and few students can make that investment without assistance. The first step in applying for financial aid is completing the FAFSA form. The program awards grants and student loans, both subsidized and unsubsidized, to students who qualify through financial need. The student loans must be repaid but they carry lower interest rate than conventional loans and usually offer the opportunity to defer payment until after graduation.
There are several grants and scholarships available through the state of Indiana as well as some that award money to out-of-state students. One of these is the EARN Indiana program which is a work-study opportunity. Most state grants are based upon financial need. The university offers needs-based assistance as well, but most university scholarships are for academic or other achievements. Alumni and departments offer awards based on differing factors.
