In 1965 Belleuve, Nebraska, home to Offutt Air Force Base, was a location with a need for a well-trained workforce. Bill Brooks asked for five minutes on the Chamber of Commerce agenda that June to discuss the possibility of an institute of higher learning in the area. The five-minute presentation led to a discussion that lasted more than a half hour. The prospect intrigued the members and Bellevue College was born one year after the meeting held at the Bellevue Steak House.
This was not the first Bellevue College, however. From 1880 to 1934, Bellevue College stood on Old Elk Hill, a gentle slope that now rises from Central Elementary and Bellevue Mission Middle Schools. The school was opened by the Presbyterian Synod of Nebraska, opening its doors in 1883. The first classes were held in the still-standing Bellevue Presbyterian Church. The school moved to the Old Elk Hill campus in 1884. In 1891, the school changed its name to the University of Omaha in an effort to attract students from Omaha.
As more institutes of higher learning were established in the area, the University of Omaha struggled and, when a tornado severely damaged the town of Fort Crook in 1908, the university began to fail, causing it to close its doors that same year. Over the years, the school served soldiers, church leaders and public school students before the campus was abandoned. It was not until the fateful Chamber of Commerce meeting that led to the revival of the campus.
By 1974, Bellevue College had grown to the fourth largest private college in Nebraska. In 1994, it became Bellevue University. The school is a global leader in adult education, serving over 13,000 students each year. It was one of the first accredited universities to offer online programs.
