The University of La Verne offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programs as well as an Associate of Arts (AA) in General Studies. Designed for students who want to go to college but aren’t sure what they want to study, it allows them to learn about multiple subjects. When they finish the general program, they can enroll in one of the university’s bachelor’s programs or transfer to another school. This program asks students to take electives and classes from eight disciplines, including social sciences, written communications, oral communications, and humanities.
With 50 different programs available for traditional undergrad, the University of La Verne can help students get the education they need to work in select fields. There is a writing program designed for those who want to work as professional writers. It includes courses on both fiction and nonfiction writing as well as writing for the web. The legal studies program prepares students for law school through classes such as Advanced Online Research, American Legal Studies, Legal Research and Writing and Litigation I and II. A paralegal studies certificate program is also available. Other majors suitable for undergrads include kinesiology, health administration, behavioral science, business administration, music, psychology, and religion and philosophy.
Also available from the University of La Verne are accelerated degree programs for adult students who are 25 or older. These programs allow students to take classes on any regional campus or online and to sign up for hybrid classes. Some programs include eight-week or 10-week classes, but some follow a traditional 16-week semester format. Business management and business administration are two of the more popular majors for accelerated students. They can also choose from programs in accounting, information technology, organizational management, sociology, psychology, public administration, and legal studies.
Multiple graduate programs are also available such as one in child and adolescent development. A 4 +1 program is open to undergrad, but the university also offers a two-year graduate program. The university’s business administration/MBA program features concentrations in accounting, finance, international business, management and leadership, information technology, health services management, supply chain management, and marketing. Experienced professionals can enroll in an accelerated version of the MBA program. Data analytics, child life, gerontology, public administration, physician assistant and teaching are among the other majors available for graduate students.
About the University of La Verne
The University of La Verne is a private university named after the city of La Verne, California, which is also home to the university’s main campus. Known as ULV, it opened as Lordsburg College in 1891 after the Church of the Brethren decided to establish a new college in the area. This campus would become La Verne a few years later after the surrounding city changed its name. The college added graduate programs in the 1960s and became ULV in the 1970s. It still has an affiliation with the Church of the Brethren and reserves seats on the Board of Trustees for members of that organization. A separate board is responsible for the operations of the seven regional campuses owned by the university. La Verne Online is a branch of the university that handles all online programs, including those for accelerated students. Across all campuses and branches, ULV has an enrollment of more than 5,000 students.
University of La Verne Accreditation Details
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available for any student attending a college or university with regional accreditation. ULV students can use this form when they need financial aid due to the university’s accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Both the psychology and education programs available from ULV have accreditation too.
University of La Verne Application Requirements
Traditional undergrads who never attended college or only earned credits through their high school classes will use the ULV online application. They need to submit transcripts that show they took two years of science classes that included one lab, three years of social science classes, four years of English courses and math classes up through the Algebra II level. The university may ask for a test score too. Students applying to any of the accelerated programs for undergrads will need to submit the same information. ULV also requires that they present transcripts from the schools where they earned their credits.
Students applying to a ULV graduate program must meet the requirements set by each department. The child and adolescent program asks that students have an undergrad grade point average of 2.75 or higher and a GPA of 3.0 or higher in all adolescent and childhood development classes they took. They also need to write a statement of purpose that describes all the experience they have with children. The program requires an interview with the department chair and a writing assessment too. Most of the university’s graduate programs require a statement of purpose or an essay as well as a resume. ULV asks for official transcripts and a completed application too.
Tuition and Financial Aid
ULV students pay different rates based on which campus they attend. The main campus charges a rate of $21,720 per year for full-time undergrads. They also pay fees of $160 each semester and another $395 every semester for an insurance plan. Those attending a regional campus or taking online classes will pay $645 per credit hour. ULV offers a discount for military students that reduces their costs to $250 per credit hour. Military students in a graduate program will pay $385 per credit hour on a regional campus, while traditional graduate students pay between $680 and $885 per credit hour on those campuses. Graduate students on the main campus pay $680 to $1,175 per credit hour. The physician assistant programs charge students $15,330 each semester.
Financial aid packages are available for students who meet eligibility requirements and submit the FAFSA. Many students qualify for at least one of the university’s scholarships. Academic scholarships use the grades and test scores of students to pick those who qualify. ULV also offers scholarships for graduate students based on their undergraduate grades. Those students may receive assistantships too, which cover 25 percent of their tuition costs each semester.
