About the University of Illinois Springfield
The University of Illinois Springfield began as an idea in 1960 and was originally known as Sangamon State University and built across 740 acres. Official legislation documents were signed in 1969 and by 1970 the university held its first classes. Many consider 1970 to be the true founding year of the institution. From 1969 and beyond, recruitment for faculty and staff members began. The university opened its doors with 45 faculty members and an enrollment of 1,000 students who participated in programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. A little over a decade later, the university welcomed 3,600 students and 200 faculty members. In 1995, Sangamon State University officially became the University of Illinois Springfield.
Since it first began, the University of Illinois Springfield has continued to embrace diversity, leadership, and innovation. UIS embraces inclusion as part of its foundational success thus far. The university provides diverse resources such as access to equal opportunities, disability services, diversity centers, safe zones, gender and sexuality services, and international student resource centers. Along with these programs, the University of Illinois Springfield acknowledges sustainability. The campus hosts a community garden as well as green projects and initiatives that promote environmentally sound choices.
UIS has been recognized by the US News & World Report as one of the top 15 public universities in the Midwest. The University of Illinois Springfield has been recently ranked 1st in the state of Illinois and 4th in the Midwest. For the most part, the University of Illinois Springfield retains the majority of its graduates. The alumni make up 28% of the workforce in the city of Springfield. In total, UIS is home to 4,275 students with over half of that number being undergraduate students. Over 50% of UIS students are enrolled full-time. The student body is primarily Illinois residents but still consists of out of state residents and international students.
The University of Illinois Springfield has more than 85 student organizations and clubs on campus. Students who enjoy sporting events can show their school pride for the NCAA Division II sports teams. The athletes at UIS participate in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and some of the intercollegiate teams include baseball, basketball, cross country and volleyball.

The University of Illinois Springfield Application Requirements
First-year undergraduate students must submit high school transcripts or GED credentials, a class rank, a satisfactory GPA and SAT or ACT scores, and a personal statement. Students who wish to apply to the Honors Program must supply the same foundational documents alongside other supplemental pieces.
Graduate students should provide official transcripts and a GPA of at least 2.5. Students who are participating in certain programs will have to provide other documents such as satisfactory GRE or GMAT scores, a resume/CV, a personal statement and letters of recommendation. All students must submit a $50 application fee in order to be considered for admissions.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate students who are residents of the state of Illinois and reside at home will pay a tuition of $19,131.60. For residents who are residing in campus apartments, tuition will be $20,331.60. Students who are residents of the state and living on campus in family housing units, tuition will be $27,781.60. Undergraduates who are nonresidents of the state and living off-campus, tuition will be $22,506.60 and for those who are nonresidents of the state and living off-campus, students will pay $30,126.60.
Graduate students who are residents of the state of Illinois and live at home will pay a tuition of $16,664.40. Students who are residents of the state and living on campus will pay $17,864.40. Graduates who are residents and residing on campus in family housing locations will pay $23,439.40. Master’s students who are residents of the state and live off-campus will pay a tuition of $20,039.40. Graduate students who are non-residents of the state and live off-campus will pay $25,575.40. Students who take more than eight credit hours will pay an additional $329 per credit hour.
Students can apply for financial aid via FAFSA. Aid is granted in the form of grants, loans, work-study programs, and scholarships. On average, 86% of undergraduate students at the university receive scholarships with financial amounts of at least $8,491.
