In 1917, the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company donated 20 acres on Marquam Hill to the University of Oregon Medical School. An additional 88-acre tract was donated by the C.S. Jackson family, the former publisher of the Oregon Journal. The school moved to the new location in 1919. The dental university merged with the University of Oregon in 1956.

In 1974, the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center formed as an independent institution and, in 1981, was renamed Oregon Health Sciences University. In 1995, the school separated from the Oregon State System of Higher Education.
