About Mansfield University

Mansfield University originated on January 7, 1857, when Preceptress Julia A. Hosmer welcomed the Mansfield Classical Seminary’s first class of 30 men and women. In 1862, Simon B. Elliott sent a successful application for the Seminary to become Mansfield Normal School. In 1892, Mansfield played the United States’ first night football game against Wyoming Seminary. In 1900, Booker T. Washington delivered an inspirational speech at Mansfield. Two years later, Mansfield received collegiate status with a new three-year teacher program. On June 4, 1926, the Commonwealth approved Mansfield’s earliest bachelor’s degree. In 1927, its name became Mansfield State Teachers College. In 1942, the Department of Health Sciences initiated nursing programs to aid WWII efforts. By July 1, 1983, Mansfield University was born as a PASSHE System constituent. In 1992, Mansfield’s baseball team finished second at the NCAA Division II World Series. In 2007, Mansfield University celebrated its sesquicentennial.

On April 18, 2018, the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (MSA) Commission on Higher Education (CHE) formally accepted a Periodic Review Report from Mansfield University to keep the Level III accreditation current through 2021-22 under the 28th president, Dr. Charles E. Mansfield University Application Requirements

Enrollment at Mansfield University is classified “moderately selective” by Peterson’s although 1,464 of the 1,595 Fall 2018 candidates were chosen for high 92 percent acceptance.
