About Indiana Wesleyan University

The Marion Normal Institute was purchased by The Indiana Conference of the Wesleyan United Methodist Church in 1919. The school was purchased in order to establish a college in the area. The property became available when the Normal School merged with the Indiana Normal School in Muncie. There was already a successful school operated by the Conference in Muncie so they raised $100,000 for an endowment for the new college.

The Marion Normal Institute operated for the next 68 years as a liberal arts college. Degree programs were added in 1979. In an effort to provide education to working adults and other non-traditional students, weekend and night classes were added. At the time, the school had a significant amount of debt and the new course schedules provided enough income to eliminate that debt and expand the Marion campus. In 1988, the school was renamed Indiana Wesleyan University.

Today, more than 14,000 students are enrolled at the University which offers programs steeped in a Christ-centered tradition, creating graduates who are focused on changing the world.
