About University of Oklahoma

Before Oklahoma became a state, the University of Oklahoma was founded, one of three universities established by the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature in 1890. When Oklahoma became a state, the Norman Territorial University became the University of Oklahoma while the other two schools remained an agricultural and mechanical college as well as a normal school.

More than 400 acres of land were donated south of the Norman Railroad Depot by residents. The first university president required that trees be planted on the campus as he could not imagine a college campus without trees. Landscaping is still an important part of campus maintenance today.

U.S. News & World Report ranks graduate schools at the university in the top 100 in the country. There are almost 22,000 undergraduate students enrolled at the University of Oklahoma.
