About the University of Missouri

In 1839, the University of Missouri opened as the Normal College. The school was created when Boone County citizens pledged land and cash to create the college whose main goal was to educate teachers. In 1867, the school was granted land-grant status with women admitted in 1871.

The School of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts was established with land-grant funds and, in 1888, the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station opened. Rather than create separate schools to meet the requirements of the Morrill Act, Missouri chose to combine all the departments into one school, allowing them to teach across disciplines.

Although there is no record of how it came to be, the school earned the nickname “Mizzou” in the early 1900s. Today, there are more than 35,000 students enrolled at the University of Missouri.
